2013 Area Championship - Round 3 (Rockingham Slot Car Club)
Round 3 of this season Area 6 Championships took us to the Super Fast 6 lane high speed arena that is Rockingham Slot Car Club on the 10th February. Thirteen hardy souls turned up from area 6, this included Steve Taylor who was dipping his toe into area competition for the first time, and very welcome he was too.

As ever Concours d'Elegance got the day underway, and this time it was David Hackforth with his RED BULL Formula 1 car that took the spoils. Well done to him. See the winner in the

This kicked off the on track action, and with one straight final for the 5 guys that were eligible, starting lanes were based on championship positions. Local superstar in this class and championship leader Chris Clements, led them away and never really looked back taking the win from Steve Taylor and Nick Clements to round out a Rockinham 1-2-3, leaving Richard Hills and David Hackforth struggling a little to match the locals.

James took control of this class from the off, posting fastest times to top the A final ahead of Gavin, Greg, Paul H and Ian rounding out the five man final. The B final had both area 10 runners and Mark, Stan and Chris Clements who was really getting stuck into some of the quicker area hopefuls. Stan doing the business after Mark called it a day and pulled up with handling problems to finish 13th. Young Chris followed Stan home, and they would finish 4th and 6th respectively. C final and John Ovens, Steve Taylor, Nick, David and Richard, were set to do battle. This race was led all the way to the flag by John, who posted a run that would place him 8th overall at the end of the day.

Back to that all important A final, and James streaked off to a comfortable lead and was never headed. Therefore the battle centred around who would be second. For much of the race, this was Paul H who found himself in that position, being chased by Gavin and Ian with Greg struggling off the pace a little. In the 4th segment, Gavin popped a gear, leaving him out of contention even for 2nd spot which in turn went down to the wire with Ian just pipping Paul, and Gavin recovering to take 5th, with Greg struggling around to finish 7th overall.

James again looked in complete control of this in the heats and indeed the semis, but this time Gavin found his feet and ran a good 2nd in the heats and semis with Paul H 3rd. This order continued in the final with Mark getting it together to take 4th, Greg 5th and Ian 6th. Outside of the final, Stan was 7th, John 8th, Chris with a Falcon car 9th, Nick 10th, Richard 11th and David 12th.

Last class of the day, and once again from the start of qualifying to the end of the race , James had this one covered and completely dominated. Gavin and Greg came in 2nd and 3rd in what looked like a rerun of the Nationals final, Ian taking 4th from the B final with Stan 5th and Mark 6th. Young Chris had a really good run to 7th overall from the C final and John Ovens 8th. Paul H had a complete disaster after ' blowing up ' in the warm up and borrowing a spare car from Richard Mack (Thanks Richard), after 4 runs, pulled up with no tyres and no desire to put the car through anymore punishment, therefore came home 12th and last.

Many thanks to Gavin and Steve for running the day, and well done to Chris on wrapping up the Novice Production title this year and James F1 and Sports. Just a small matter of Saloon to deal with and to finalise who will be going in what at the Nationals, as we head to Ipswich for the 4th and final round. It will be good stuff and I look forward to it very much.
